I haven't had to buy a battery in years, and electrical isn't my strength. My question is, is the battery for a particular car all about some specific volt rating mated to the powerplant, or is it all about what fits in the battery tray? For instance, I know a M5 battery won't fit, but other than the size/footprint, is everything else the same? So, brands aside, the last time I bought a battery, there were different options given to me for types. While I've searched high and low for it, I'll be damned but I can't find the battery. I took the battery out of my '83 last fall which has a turbocharged M30 engine in it. So I need a new battery, and a search led me to this thread, so I have a couple of questions to ask about my impending purchase. Which leads me to my next question: what is a good, relatively cheap battery i could use? my 535 has a bmw battery in it around the 5 year old mark but i am guessing those are expensive (although it has never given me any problems).Īnyway, thanks for your help in advance, and i apologize for the redundant post. if i took it there now, they would give me a free replacement, but it would only be a matter of time until this same stuff happens again. it is an interstate something-or-other the PO got from sears, and they have been replacing them for free about 1-2 times a year, either saying that 'the batteries we are selling are bad' or 'your alternator is bad.' the alternator is operating within spec, and has a new voltage regulator. I have gone through 6 batteries in this car since 2005 and i think that seems pretty unacceptable. Long story short, is there a way i can fully charge this battery (or at least try to) without a battery charger? just driving it? is the battery shot? can a battery be permanently damaged by a drain from the alarm, even if it is only a few days before it is detected/fixed? but then the car sat for about 5 days and would not even crank over so i jumped it. it seems to have fixed the problem for a while (in fact there is no current draw other than the tiny normal amount). Previously, right after i bought this battery, i discovered that the POS alarm relay was pulling a lot of power, so i replaced that. since this is below the recommended spec, i am assuming this means the battery is not charging completely. ![]() so i figured i would unhook it completely and let it sit over night.Ĭhecked the next day and it was at 11.7v. ![]() when i got back, the battery was holding steady at around 12v. The other day i took it out for a 5+ hour drive to northern nm. with all accessories on there is no drain with the car off (other than the very small 50mA on fuse 5) at first i thought i found a drain but then realized it was because i had my trunk open ) the alternator is good and charging properly. So far i have checked for current drain on all fuseable components and all seems well. it is an 87 528e 5spd w/ 333k miles on it. I realize there are other threads about this but i figured i'd add another one.
